阿姆哈拉语是埃塞俄比亚的官方语言。属阿非罗-亚细亚语系闪语族。
阿姆哈拉语（Amharic language）原先分布于埃塞俄比亚阿姆哈拉地区，故此得名，现分布于埃塞俄比亚中部、南部地区。使用人口约2200万。跟阿非罗-亚细亚语系诸语言的早期阶段相比较，阿姆哈拉语的几种方言之间区别不大。阿姆哈拉语丧失了大部分喉音，名词格的变化也已经消失。动词中的元音有两类：一是完全元音，另一是简化元音。阿姆哈拉语采用音节文字（见阿姆哈拉文）。
基本介绍
阿姆哈拉语( )为闪语的一种，是埃塞俄比亚的官方语言，主要用于埃塞俄比亚的中北部，但在该国其它地区也使用。在埃塞俄比亚以外，阿姆哈拉语亦有270万的使用者(尤其是分布在埃及、以色列、及瑞典等国)。它的书写语是用一种称为“斐德”(fidel)的字母，或称"阿布基得字母"(abugida)。此种字母来自于已不在市面流通的吉兹语（吉兹语只用于埃塞俄比亚的正教仪式，或此地的犹太人社区在进行经文仪轨时所使用）。
发音
下列子母音表中的音素大都使用适当的Unicode符号来标示。从下表可看出，阿姆哈拉语在喉音方面大量退化，而齿音这方面却广泛的使用。 阿姆哈拉语"阿布基得"(子母音合成)字型(亦称"斐德字母" )
由下列字型表中可了解到，有一些音素有两组的婓德字母如"qaf"、"kaf"、"g ml"、"h rm"，而在"h"却有四组,在这些组群中所分出"u"音系列只拼出5个婓德字母。于婓德字母表中,母音是依其引用次序( 、y、i、a、e、 、o)来排列，而子音是以其音节种类来分组群顺序(请参考上列之子音音素表)。婓德字母构成的方式是由最左边第一栏上的子音加上最上边列的母音所合成的，公式如：婓德字母=(子音+母音)。不过你要能够看到这些婓德字体可能需要外加的阿姆哈拉语字型软体来配合，这儿提供一种名为(GF Zemen Unicode}的字码。
不以阿姆哈拉语为母语的人经常被这些看起来复杂又这么相似的婓德字母所困扰著。不过也不用担心，阿姆哈拉语类如其它的闪语族系一样是使用三个子音为字根基础而来构成单词的结构。一般娴熟阿姆哈拉语的人都能够利用子音在婓德字母群中的文字组合上之突显特性，而来抓紧文章的主题内容。进一步来看，因为中文的字母型体本身也包含子母音的合成架构，因而使用中文的人对用以子母音合成之婓德字母来拼写的阿姆哈拉语是比较容易理解的。另从音素组合表的角度而言，阿姆哈拉语的斐德字母表倒是类同于日文五十音等系列字母表。
现代版本
为了配合手机的简讯传送，在2004年由埃塞俄比亚及美国的语言学家及科技人员，并和加州大学教授的共同参与之下，已将总数为345个的婓德字母简缩为210个，再将210个字母归类为28个基础拼音字母。如此的发展之下，阿姆哈拉语已可配合手机来传简讯，进而埃塞俄比亚的通讯也快速地跨入21世纪。

教学发展
2013年9月，北京外国语大学新增设埃塞俄比亚的官方语言阿姆哈拉语的课程。北外校长韩震在2013年9月表示，北外非洲语言与文化研究中心将整合北外非洲研究的学术资源，进一步完善北外区域研究的学科布局，扩大北外同非洲国家高校的交流与合作。北外亚非学员上世纪60年代初就开始了非洲本土语言斯瓦希里语及豪萨语的教学和研究，2013年9月份，增设埃塞俄比亚的官方语言阿姆哈拉语，今后还将逐步扩大非洲语种的数量，并将形成以非洲语言与文化为切入点的非洲研究特色。
