美国国歌是《星光灿烂的旗帜》（The Star-Spangled Banner，又译作《星条旗》），由英国作曲家约翰·斯塔福德·史密斯（John Stafford Smith）作曲，美国律师弗朗西斯·斯科特·基（Francis Scott Key）作词。

网络上美国国歌常被翻译成是“星条旗永不落” ，常与美国进行曲《星条旗永不落》（The Stars and Stripes Forever）混淆。

创作背景

巴尔的摩市东南的麦克亨利堡，建在一个小半岛上，是个平面成五角星状的要塞，扼进港要道。第二次美英战争期间作为前哨阵地抗击英军。1814年，英国舰队直扑麦克亨利堡，昼夜连续猛轰此堡。当时，有一位名叫弗朗西斯·斯科特·基的美国律师乘船到英舰交涉释放被扣留的美国平民。他目击了英军炮轰麦克亨利堡及美军英勇抵抗的惨烈场面，忧心如焚。1814年9月13日凌晨，弗朗西斯·斯科特·基透过炮火的硝烟，看到一面美国国旗仍然在城堡上迎风飘扬，他被这景像深深感动，随手在一封信的背后写下了几行诗。后来，他把诗稿送给法官尼科尔逊（Nicholson），得到大力赞赏，并建议用一首当时非常流行的曲子John Stafford Smith作曲的“To Anacreon in Heaven”做为配曲，同时取歌名为“星条旗之歌”（The Star-Spangled Banner），这首歌深受美国人民的喜爱，很快就传遍全国。1931年，美国国会正式将《星光灿烂的旗帜》定为美国国歌。

关于译名

The Star-Spangled Banner直译为“星光灿烂的旗帜”，正式翻译常用《星条旗》或者《星条旗之歌》。

1972年，美国总统尼克松访华，期间军乐团演奏的即为《星条旗永不落》。导致美国国歌“星条旗”(TheStar-SpangledBanner)被错误地认为是《星条旗永不落》，此说法流传甚广，因此许多民众误以为此即美国国歌。目前网络上已认可将美国国歌翻译为“星条旗永不落”，也有人将此作为正式翻译，网络词典对美国国歌的翻译通常为“星条旗永不落”

另有美国“进行曲之王”苏萨（John Philip Sousa，1854年－1932年）的著名代表作进行曲The Stars and Stripes Forever，即“星条旗永不落”。
